Dunbar Fisher Lass, c1900

HistoryShelf has been set up to make available some of the results of nearly two years' research and writing in two separate projects. Find out how people have banded together for mutual aid and support in Self-help; explore the story of Scotland's East Coast fisheries in Fisheries. Then test your knowledge with our quizzes, crosswords, wordsearches and hangman games.

Painting, 'Nova Spera', by John Bellany

In the SHELF section there are a number of quizzes, games and activities, plus three 'essays' about selected aspects of the 'self-help' movement: Friendly Societies in the Lothians and Fife; the Free Gardeners; and Libraries.

Scotland's East Coast Fisheries, or SECF, includes illustrated 'essays' on the whaling industry; dangers at sea; and the herring fishery.

This site contains educational resources and activities that came from two digitisation projects funded by the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) through Resources for Learning in Scotland (RLS).

East Lothian Council Museums Service was the lead partner of two consortia, each of which created over 6,600 digitial resources for the Resource for Learning in Scotland project. For further information about the projects and our partners see the project areas for SHELF (Self Help Edinburgh Lothians Fife) and SECF (Scotland's East Coast Fisheries).
