Scotland's East Coast Fisheries

The story of fishing on the East coast is long and complex. This project brings together some 6,600 digitised resources, including photographs, paintings, objects, documents and audio recordings. In addition to selections from the collections of all the local authorities on the East coast, the Scottish Fisheries Museum, the University of Aberdeen and the National Archives of Scotland, material has been included from private collections and from the resources of community groups.

This site includes three sections looking at aspects of the story: the Herring fishery, Whaling, and dangers at sea. We have also included some activities (wordsearches, quizzes, crosswords and hangman games), to test your knowledge.

The full set of digitised resources is available on the RLS web site, together with a range of educational resource packs produced as part of the project. It is intended eventually to make these resource packs available here as well.

This digitisation project was funded by the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) through Resources for Learning in Scotland (RLS).
